Commercial Solar PV Systems
Businesses tend to use a great deal of energy but by embracing sustainable energy systems such as solar power can reduce their energy consumption, reduce their own carbon footprint AND get paid to do so.
You may need both help and support in achieving your renewable targets and the codes for Sustainable Homes. PV Solar panels, solar thermal energy systems and heat pumps may go some way to help you meet your targets.
Many local authorities, public sector organisations, schools and councils have embraced and subsequently moved into the creation of renewable energy with a substantial part of this strategy being solar PV electricity generation and solar thermal energy systems.
A number of commercial solar power installation companies now thrive and several are acknowledged by prestigious awards so it is not difficult to select the knowledgeable operators who one would also expect to be MCS accredited (Microgeneration Certification Scheme).
Solar Photovoltaic systems can be mounted onto virtually any commercial building in order to help to generate renewable energy and reduce their carbon footprint.
Just as in the householder systems, a south facing roof is ideal, but panels can just as easily be mounted onto a flat roof via the use of low weight mounting structures creating the opportunity to angle the panels in the most cost effective direction, it is also sometimes used as building cladding. With some commercial systems they do differ from the residential installations in other ways than size, as different panel compositions offer different levels of system efficiency.
New build applications can be structured so that the roof material itself comprises of solar tiles, which offers a very high tech appearance.
Commercial systems typically generate around 8,000kWh per year saving in the region of 5 tonnes of CO2.
SME’s may find themselves eligible via the Carbon Trust for interest free loans to help fund the project. (Between £3,000 - £100,000) – The anticipated energy savings offset the loan repayments so that new equipment should pay for itself.
See www.carbontrust.co.uk for eligibility
The feed-in tariff scheme was designed to accelerate take-up of small scale power generation albeit many have not yet appreciated that it applies to commercial property owners as well as residential owners.
Many of the suppliers and installers follow the same straight-forward system
Conduct a survey and design a system suitable for you demonstrating likely energy to be generated and energy cost savings
Send quote for both equipment and installation
Install the system and assist with applications for grants and feed-in tariffs
Some installers however do offer unique systems inclusive of Revenue share in which the business makes no contribution to the capital cost – the system remains the property of the supplier until the system is paid for from revenue generated by selling the power generated under the feed-in tariff – once this occurs then the revenue generated is shared for the remaining life-span of the equipment.
