GETTING THE RIGHT INSTALLER
This is an independent certification scheme designed to certify both Microgeneration products and their installers to ensure consistent standards are achieved and maintained. This will provide the customer with both confidence and protection – especially as MCS certified installers must also undertake to have membership of the REAL Assurance scheme. The means that they must abide by a code contributing to a high standard of consumer service, before, during and after a contract is agreed.
The Solar standards Organisation is also worth exploring when seeking accredited solar installers.
In the last few years the rules on planning permission in England have changed to allow householders to carry out some work without the need for planning permission.
BUT it is still a good idea to check with your local authority as some rules do still apply, especially if the work you are planning will affect your neighbours in some way. Also, if the roof has been shown to be unsuitable and you have opted for an "A frame" installation, you may need permission for this.
Anyone living in a conservation area, world heritage site or in a listed building will need to contact the planners to see what is and isn’t allowed.
Householders in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland should always consult their local planners, as their rules may differ from those in England.
