Advantages and disadvantages of solar energy systems – by MySolarPower

Clearly when discussing a wide technological concept as solar energy systems, there are pro’s and con’s and in this section MySolarPower will simply list what we see as the advantages and disadvantages leaving you to decide what you think.

Advantages of solar energy systems

Has lots of uses from producing electricity to heating water to desalination, cars and to satellites
Free sustainable source which is virtually inexhaustible
Solar energy is environmentally friendly and reduces personal carbon footprints
It is clean and does not require fossil fuels to produce it
Cheap energy in comparison – once initial funding has been recovered
Grants are available
Good for remote areas where power connection is difficult
If you produce more energy than you use – you can sell the extra to your utility company
Once installed there are no running costs
It gives you control and is generated where its needed
Not subject to constant price increases
Does not contribute to global warming or acid rain or radioactive waste
Not affected by power cuts or strikes
Long life and low maintenance
Systems are generally flexible and can easily be added to.
Good supplement to other renewable sources
Fossil fuel reliance can be dramatically reduced
Silent – no noise pollution

Disadvantages of solar energy systems

Its diluted once it enters our atmosphere so lots of solar connectors are required
The energy source is cheap but the collection and conversion equipment may be expensive
Return on capital investment can be slow
You need as much sun as possible and we don’t all live in Florida
Ineffective at night
Usually needs to be still linked to mains systems
Solar panels require large installation areas
Solar energy production may be influenced by matters outside your control – cloud cover or pollution levels
Systems are not always attractive to look at
It has to be installed – can’t just phone and be connected
Have to pay up-front costs not simply a quarterly utility bill
